A Little Words About Us

About the CW Foundation

The Cameron Ward Music Foundation was founded on a simple but powerful truth:
music can change lives.

For Cameron Ward — celebrated South African guitarist and longtime protégé of the legendary Hugh Masekela — music wasn’t just a passion. It was a path away from the dangers of gang violence, poverty, and hopelessness in the Cape Flats, where he grew up. Raised by a single mother who encouraged him through faith and music, Cameron’s journey began in a small church band and led him to the world’s biggest stages, performing at venues like Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.

But Cameron never forgot where he came from — or the many young people still searching for a way out.

We provide professional music education to children, teens, and young adults from disadvantaged communities across Cape Town and beyond. Our students — some as young as six — are taught instruments like guitar, bass, drums, piano, vocals, saxophone, and percussion, guided by talented and compassionate tutors.

Yet what we offer goes far beyond music lessons.

For many of our students, the foundation is more than a school — it’s a safe haven. In homes and streets where love, guidance, and stability are often missing, the foundation becomes a place to feel protected, supported, and valued.

Here, young people not only discover their talents, but also build confidence, form friendships, and learn the discipline and focus needed to succeed — in music and in life.

Our purpose, our passion, our promise.

Vision

We dream of a future where every young person, no matter their background, has access to the tools, mentors, and creative outlets they need to thrive.

Our goals include:

  • Alleviating poverty through education and opportunity

  • Increasing employment and exposure for local artists

  • Establishing a full-scale arts centre to serve future generations

Mission

At the heart of our work is a commitment to guiding young people away from harmful paths and toward a future filled with creativity, purpose, and possibility.

Our goals include:

  • To show youth that there’s more to life than drugs, alcohol, and gangsterism

  • To help each student reach their full potential

  • To use music as a vehicle for healing, expression, and change
